Pre-WWI:
Group summary of time period goes here
The late 1800s was a turbulent time in the United States. The Southern states wanted to keep slavery as well as secede from the Northern states who had abolished slavery. From the 1850’s there were many events going on. There was the compromise of 1850 that was passed by the United States congress that established the parameters to facilitate and limit the expansion of slavery to new conquered territories. The book “The Scarlet Letter” was written around this time and it was a fairly good period in which this book was based on. Then later on going into the 1860’s we have the beginning of the American Civil War which was also known as the War Between the States. The US Civil War ensued from 1861-1865. When the Union (Northern States) defeated the Southern Confederacy, the nation was in tatters. The United States was now one whole nation, but at a terrible cost. The Reconstruction era helped to restructure and rebuild the USA to what it once was, now with slavery abolished. The setting of "The Red Badge of Courage" by Stephen Crane takes place during this time, however, he published it in 1895, and the US was in a fairly good condition by then. The setting of “The Call of the Wild” was also based on this time though it was written in 1903.

The Scarlet Letter

The Scarlet Letter is about a woman, Hester Prynne, who has a baby, Pearl, and this baby, was born of an affair between Hester and a mysterious man. Hester has a scarlet letter “A” branded on her skin because this showed she committed adultery, for she was pregnant with a child and she hasn’t seen her husband in years. Dimmesdale, the priest of the town, as well as the man that Hester committed adultery with, hid the fact that Pearl was his daughter and when he confessed, he died.

The Scarlet Letter was written in the 1850’s during a period of transcendentalism, which is the movement in which individuals can overcome anything. Anti-transcendentalism is the idea in which individuals try to overcome things but society gangs up on them and e overwhelms the individual and therefore they cannot overcome things no matter how hard they try. For example, in The Scarlet Letter, Hester is condemned when she has a child with a man, not her husband, and the town condemns her with A’s on every article of clothing, standing for adultery. The man she committed adultery with, feels guilt for everyone condemning Hester, and when he admits it was him, he is now condemned as well.

Call of the Wild

The Call of the Wild is about a domestic, turned sled-dog. The plot mostly focuses on Buck as he is trained and eventually sold to new masters. The climax of the story unfolds when his new owners try to travel during the spring melt even though they were specifically told not to. When their food supply runs low, they stop feeding the sled-dogs and may perish during the journey. Along the way, they meet John Thornton who is an experienced outdoorsman who guides them through the mountains. Eventually, they encounter a semi-frozen river which is not crossable, but Buck's owners refuse to listen. However, John cuts Buck free and says he is to keep Buck. As the owners cross the river, the ice breaks, drowning them all. Thornton and Buck then leave and the story continues with the pair going on more adventures.
The story was written to be set in the late 1800s during the time period of the gold rush when everyone wanted their share of gold. This was the whole reason that Buck and his new masters decided to travel through the mountains in search of gold mines.1166%20Call%20of%20the%20Wild.jpg
